Sunderland Illustrated: Celebrating 30 years of the University of Sunderland

Stories of who we are by those who know us best

In 1992, HM Queen Elizabeth granted Sunderland city status to mark the 40th anniversary of her accession to the throne. In the same year our former polytechnic was awarded university status. 30 years on the University is proud to be changing the lives of students – many of whom are from Sunderland and the surrounding area – and to be working with businesses and organisations who play a positive part in supporting the social and economical ambitions of our city.

To mark this special occasion, National Glass Centre has commissioned local artist and illustrator, Kathryn Robertson, to tell the story of the key moments of our history by interpreting diverse stories from students, staff and the wider University community.

You can click on each person below to hear their story and see Kathryn’s illustrations.
