Museum’s Jubliee Celebrations are for all the family
HER MAJESTY The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be celebrated with a special programme of activities at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens.
Events to mark the Queen’s 70 years of service start on Saturday, May 21, with a community display and a Queen Through Time trail.
The display, Pyrex 100: A Right Royal Celebration, features items of Pyrex loaned from the community which include garden party tea sets, celebration-themed designs and Silver Jubilee items from 1977.
The Queen Through Time trail celebrates her Majesty’s reign by exploring events that have happened over the past seven decades through objects and stories in the Museum’s galleries. The trail costs £2.50 per person, purchased at the Museum shop, and you can claim a prize if you return a successfully completed trail sheet to reception.
On Monday, May 30, the Museum will host a Lowry Family Day, with the opportunity to create a Lowry-inspired landscape at 11am, 1pm and 2.30pm. L.S. Lowry was an official artist for the Queen’s Coronation on June 2, 1953 and now the Museum is offering families the opportunity to learn more about the artist and his paintings. Places must be pre-booked via the Museum’s website or shop – £2 per child, adults go free. Please note a 50p charge applies to website bookings.
Two days later (Wednesday, June 1) artist Sue Woolhouse will lead a session on making Platinum Jubilee Coasters. Sue will help you create your own Jubilee inspired fused glass coaster with the Queen’s portrait, union flags and red, white and blue decorations. Tickets for the afternoon session (1.30pm to 3pm) cost £5 per person and can be booked via the Museum’s website – the sessions are suitable for ages 7+. Please note a 50p charge applies to website bookings.
The Museum’s Creative Age group for adults living with dementia and their carers has been working with Sue to make commemorative Jubilee glass coasters to sell in the Museum shop and raise funds to support the group. Creative Age is also on the lookout for new members. On Saturday, June 4, Curious Arts will host A Curious Jubilee at the Museum, a series of Royal-related activities for the family to enjoy.
The fun will start at 11am, when youngsters aged four to seven (and their families) will get the chance to make their own crown and learn how to make a Royal wave. This Royal for the Day session will be repeated at 12.15pm, 1pm and 1.30pm.
Meanwhile, activities from 11am to 2pm include Royal Life Drawing; What’s in the Queen’s handbag and Create your family crest.
Jennie said: “The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is a celebration for the nation to enjoy and we wanted to put together a programme of activities for the whole family.
“It’s a milestone date for the Royal family and the country, and to celebrate within one of the city’s landmark buildings seems appropriate.”
