Our Teacher’s Hub has been created to help teachers & schools more effectively use and promote arts and cultural education as a vital component of a balanced, exciting curriculum. 


Principles & Priorities

The principles and priorities of this section are focused on : 

  • Primary schools 
  • Supporting children and young people experiencing inequality and disadvantage 
  • Approaches which involve learning through the arts 
  • Promoting effective and equitable partnerships between schools and arts/cultural organisations and artist practitioners 
  • Supporting the delivery of an arts-rich curriculum and school environment. 
  • Supporting school leaders to embed learning through the arts in the curriculum 
  • Providing more opportunities to develop teachers skills and professional practice in teaching through the arts 

Goals for pupils

We hope that this resource, with support from school leaders and teachers, will help pupils to: 

  • Increase opportunity to develop their creativity skills and understand their own creativity  
  • Visit creative spaces, meet creative people and be inspired 
  • Improve engagement with and enjoyment of creative learning opportunities 
  • Improve awareness of expressive arts and creative practice by and alongside artists  
  • Understand more about the creative offer in the city of Sunderland 
  • Consider a creative career in the future 
  •  Improve levels of confidence and their ability to express themselves
  • To feel confident to describe themselves as ‘artists’ 
  • Build young people’s confidence, character and resilience through arts and cultural education 

Goals for teachers

We hope this hub will give you:

  • Improved understanding of creativity skills and how they can support learning and learners creatively  
  •  Increased capacity and confidence in using creative learning across the curriculum 
  • Enhanced repertoire and toolkit from which to teach, including adopting and adapting plans to suit learner, subject and curriculum needs  
  • Improved capability to deliver the suite of session plans autonomously and with creativity and confidence. 
  • Forge creative partnerships across the City
