Grayson Perry: The Vanity of Small Differences – Quiet Exhibition Visits

Sunderland Culture is committed to creating a welcoming environment for all our visitors and are delighted to be able to offer relaxed and quiet SEN (special educational needs) sessions for visitors on selected dates and times. These sessions are aimed at people with autism and other needs, as well as their siblings, families and carers to be able to enjoy the exhibition in a relaxed atmosphere.

Enjoy a quiet visit to see the Grayson Perry tapestries.

These sessions are aimed at individuals, families or groups with hypersensitive sensory issues (can easily be over-stimulated by sensations, sounds and activities). Adaptations for the visit include:

• A social story to introduce you to the Museum & Winter Gardens before your visit
• The option to come and go as you need within the time and flexibility if you can’t make your timeslot on the day.
• Visitors are expected to respect the quiet rule and will be asked to keep voices low and switch phones or devices to silent mode.
• Numbers are limited to 10 people maximum per session.
• You can move around the space freely (the tapestries will be protected by barriers and extra staff are on hand to help).
• There are sensory backpacks with objects and art materials to help you enjoy exploring the tapestries – these are available at all times.
• A quiet space is available in the Harry Watts meeting room on Level 3. Our quiet space will have low sensory input to reset and calm sensory overload, or equally be a private space to give medicines or tube feed.
• We will ask you to fill out a pre-visit questionnaire when booking to help us better understand your needs and a post-visit questionnaire to see how we can improve. Please fill in the pre-visit questionnaire here.

We would also like to make visitors aware that one of the tapestries in the exhibition includes potentially distressing themes showing a car accident, injury and death.
