Coal Face: Sunderland

Explore the stories of Sunderland’s collieries through the faces and the words of 40 of the people who knew them best. ‘Coal Face: Sunderland’ is an exhibition of film and tintype portraiture from local photographer Andy Martin, as well as poetry and prose from writer Dr Louise Powell, both of whom have won awards for their work. Through a dialogue between word and image, Powell and Martin create a compelling narrative about working life in Sunderland’s mines – and what it means to have seen the collieries close.

‘Coal Face: Sunderland’ is supported using public funding from Arts Council England and delivered in partnership with Sunderland Culture, Cultural Spring, Redhills Durham and University College London.
