Celebrate Different Collective are a group of young people aged 15 – 25 years old from Sunderland who co-curate events and exhibitions with Sunderland Culture.
For their exhibition Where There’s Space to Grow at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens the group selected a range of artworks from Arts Council Collection including Boy, ?, Girl by artist Hadrian Piggot. Unlike the other artworks featured in the exhibition, this piece had no accompanying information, leaving it open to different interpretations. Working with artist Melody Sproates young people from Celebrate Different and YAK (Young Art Kommunity from Firstsite, Colchester) created a zine filled with collaged artworks and written responses to the artwork. Ideas included subverting gender norms in the media and imagining a future with no barriers or boundaries.
Zines are a hand-made, accessible way to express creative ideas. The young people hope you enjoy this zine and feel inspired to create your own.

This project is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Where There’s Space to Grow is the fifth in Sunderland Culture’s series of Arts Council Collection National Partners Programme exhibitions.
